The Greek New Testament Project: Where Things Stand

It has been a wonderful journey to play a part in the creation of The Greek New Testament According to the Byzantine Text. My role has mostly been to bring ideas to the table—ideas that others, with the technical and editorial skill to carry them forward, have taken hold of and turned into a finished work.

Giving credit where it belongs

Any account of this project would be incomplete without saying plainly that J. Jeffrey Dodson did the vast majority of the editorial and technical work. I am deeply grateful to him, and to the other members of the Guardian Press Editorial Committee, for the knowledge, patience, and labor they brought to this edition.

Taking responsibility for the printing

As the project moved from a digital edition toward the possibility of a physical book, someone needed to coordinate the printing. To keep that process simple and give it one clear point of responsibility, I offered to take it on through Biblical Studies and Reviews. The committee was happy for me to do so, and I am grateful for their confidence.

We have now secured a quote from an established professional printer that makes a 500-copy hardbound printing financially viable. Our goal is to complete the printing before the end of the year. That now appears possible, although it is not a guarantee: the schedule still depends on final proof approval and the printer’s production calendar. Our current working estimate is approximately 16 weeks from the start of production through packaging and shipment.

I am deeply grateful for the response: the first 150 preorders sold out within the first 24 hours. New preorders are currently paused while I confirm the final order count and move the first printing into production.

The book we hope to produce

Lord willing, the finished volume will be a 752-page, 6″ × 9″ hardbound book with a Smyth-sewn binding, cloth cover, and foil stamping on the front and spine. My hope is to produce something durable and useful—something readers can study from for many years.
